Rail electrification ‘very urgent’ for climate change targets

15 organisations from the railway industry have sent an open letter to transport secretary Grant Shapps asking for an immediate programme of rail electrification.

To achieve net zero by 2050, about 280 miles a year of track will need to be electrified, up from 156 miles in 2019/20.

David Clarke, technical director of the Railway Industry Association, said that government action is “very urgent”.
