Marcus Stoinis’ blistering innings overshadowed Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s century as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) registered a thrilling six-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a high-scoring encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in match 39 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s masterful century

After being invited to bat first, CSK innings began with Ajinkya Rahane‘s early departure, scoring just 1 run off 3 balls. However, Gaikwad emerged as the linchpin of the CSK innings, showcasing sublime batting skills. Gaikwad’s breathtaking century mesmerized the crowd, as he carved his way to a majestic 108 runs off a mere 60 deliveries. His innings was a blend of elegance and power, punctuated by 12 exquisite boundaries and 3 towering sixes.

Shivam Dube’s explosive cameo

Despite Gaikwad’s brilliance, the other CSK batters struggled to capitalize on the solid foundation laid by their opener. Daryl Mitchell and Ravindra Jadeja failed to score with high-strike rate, but it was Shivam Dube‘s explosive cameo that injected momentum into the innings. Dube’s scintillating 66 runs off just 27 balls, featuring 3 boundaries and an impressive 7 sixes, propelled CSK to a formidable to score of 210/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite the onslaught, LSG’s bowlers put up a commendable effort, with Matt Henry, Mohsin Khan and Yash Thakur among the wicket-takers for the innings.

Marcus Stoinis’ blistering innings turns the tide

In pursuit of a challenging target of 211 runs, LSG’s innings got off to a rocky start with Quinton de Kock departing for a duck. Nevertheless, KL Rahul and Marcus Stoinis steadied the ship with a cautious yet effective partnership. De Kock’s departure brought Stoinis to the crease, who then took the game by storm. Stoinis unleashed a barrage of boundaries and sixes, decimating the CSK bowling attack with his aggressive strokeplay. His breathtaking innings of 124 runs off just 63 deliveries completely shifted the momentum in LSG’s favour,

LSG’s remarkable chase and victory

Stoinis’ knock was a masterclass in power-hitting, as he smashed 13 boundaries and 6 monstrous sixes to leave the CSK bowlers gasping for breath. Supported by Nicholas Pooran and Deepak Hooda, Stoinis propelled LSG towards the target with sheer determination and grit as LSG reached the target with three balls to spare, finishing at 213/4 in 19.3 overs.

Here’s how Twitter reacted:

This Stoinis knock is better than Buttler as it was vs 2 of the better death bowlers going around & in den of CSK who with their shrewd planning choke this kind of chase 9 out of 10 times. Its the highest run chase on chepak & highest individual score which tells how hard it is

— Ishaan (@1tothepoint) April 23, 2024

This is the worst loss in the history of CSK.

So sending Stoinis at no 3 and Jadeja at no 4 was the difference in the end

Hmm, so Australian team for T20 World Cup could be- Head, Warner, Fraser, Maxwell, Marsh, Stoinis, Green, Inglis, Tim David, Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, Zampa, Wade, Ellis.

It Will be difficult to beat them😥
